South Australian Duck and Quail Seasons Announced

CHASA would like to congratulate the Malinuiskus government on its declaration of the 2023 Duck and Quail open season. The announcement was the result of a thorough process that kicks off in late October where the Department of Environment and Water along with CHASA its member organizations and other key stakeholders participate in the annual spring waterfowl survey. This data along with key weather observations, historical data analysis, and a well-researched understanding of Australian Waterfowl behaviours ensure sustainable seasons such as the upcoming 2023 season are set.

CHASA and all game bird hunters from across Australia thank the South Australian Government for adopting such sustainable practices which ensure the continuation of our cultural traditions. We are all very excited about the prospects of this season, with record rainfall across much of Australia culminating in one of the largest River Murray floods (in European History of Course the custodians of our land have seen much bigger). The significant breeding these floods have generated across the Murray Darling is expected to make for exceptional hunting, particularly in the latter half of the season.

The details for the seasons are below

Duck Season

Duration:18th of March to the 25th of June, 30 minutes Prior to sunrise and 30 minutes after sunset

Bag: 8 Ducks

Species: Grey teal, Black duck, Chestnut teal, Wood duck, and Mountian Duck are the only species which can be harvested during the open season.

Stubble Quail Season

Duration: 29th of April to 30th of July, 30 minutes Prior to sunrise and 30 minutes after sunset

Bag: 25

CHASA is dissapointed that the goverment decided to exclude Pink Eared Duck and Hardhead from the list this year despite the significant breeding event that has occurred. The March 18 openning date is also dissappointing as this is likley to clash with the Victorian opening significantly reducing the economic contribution from interestate visitors to regional SA namely the Riverland and South East.
